Welcome to the NBA Advanced Matchups, presented by Ohnjz. I’ll be taking you deep into the depths of NBA advanced stats to uncover the top plays in each NBA slate (with 4 or more games). We’ll consider a broad spectrum of metrics here, including SPORTSVU player and shot tracking, play type data, individual defensive metrics, and my personal favorite, Ohnjz’ bad-jokes-and-snarky-comments-per-article. As always, this work is meant as a guide to help you hone in on what advanced stats would suggest are some of the top plays – but it’s ultimately up to you to decide how to build your lineups.
UNDER THE MICROSCOPE
PF Showdown: Blake Griffin vs Draymond Green
Editor’s Note: Draymond Green (rest) has been ruled out for tonight.
These two don’t really like each other. The bad blood should lead to some interesting rebounding battles and possibly hard fouls tonight, but so long as Blake can keep his cool he makes for an intriguing option due to his decreasing price throughout the industry. Blake has yet to really have an explosive game since returning from injury, and has struggled to rebound on par with last season (more than 6 rebounds in just 1 of his last 5 games). However, given his consistent 40+ FPT production when given 30+ minutes of late, he seems like a safe option considering the run he should get tonight. The Warriors lone ‘normal’ DVP ratings are in the frontcourt, where they rank 18th vs PFs, a ranking that has slipped to 25th over the last 3 weeks. Blake also holds a size advantage over Warriors PF Draymond Green (though we can say that most nights the Warriors play, and the Warriors want people to try to take advantage), who might not even play tonight. If Green is out, turnstiles Marreese Speights and the mother-of-all-non-defense David Lee will have no hope of containing Blake tonight.
