NBA Tool Analysis: Ceiling and Consistency

Hello Grinders!

This writeup will show you how to use the Ceiling and Consistency tool to assist in your lineup constructions. As the Kevin Hart saying goes: “You gon learn today!”

This tool has all of the standard sorting features like positions, season, 3 weeks, etc., so you’ll be familiar with these if you’ve read the first two weeks of this column. The main points of interest for this tool though are the FPMIN, Floor, Ceiling, %2x, %3x and so on. I’ll be focusing on how to analyze players based on how many times they can produce %5x and %6x their salary.

For tournament plays, you are really looking for guys that can get you 6x their salary. For cash games, you would want your players to hit somewhere between 4x and 5x.

Let’s first take a look at the Miami point guards, Norris Cole and Mario Chalmers. Dwayne Wade is likely going to sit out again, so I can’t fault you for rostering both Cole and Chalmers tonight. Chalmers has certainly been the popular play with Wade on the sidelines, but the numbers are suggesting the Cole might be the better tournament play based on his price tonight. Cole has gone for 6x his salary in four games, while Chalmers has only reached 6x value three times. Again, there are only two games tonight, so rostering both is certainly an option. That being said, Cole gives a bit more salary relief for similar tournament upside.

Sticking with the same game and the same position, we can check out Chris Paul. Paul is without a doubt the best point guard in the league. He controls the game and he seems like he has the ball on a string. With that said though, he has not been a good tournament play this year. The Clippers like to run a good amount of plays through Blake Griffin, which hinders Paul’s upside. Take a look at the chart below to see what I mean.

Paul is simply priced too high. He has hit 5x only once this season and has yet to break the 6x barrier. He might be tough to avoid tonight, but you might want to think twice about putting him in your tournament lineups on a larger-slate night.

Center is another position that I would like to highlight today, as hitting on that position is usually very critical in tournaments. This is especially important on FanDuel, where you can only roster one.

If you asked me to rank these three for a tournament without looking at this chart. I would have gone with Cousins, Bosh and Jordan in that order. The tool is telling us that DeAndre Jordan is actually the best tournament player so far, as he has gone for 5x in two games and 6x in one game. With Cousins banged up and Jordan being 2.5k cheaper, it looks like I’ll be rolling Jordan in my tournament lineup tonight.

The last position to take a look at today is shooting guard. Jimmy Butler has been fantasy gold so far this season, but his price has finally risen to a point where he isn’t an auto play. He is a great cash game play, but for 2.2k cheaper you could roll out Jamal Crawford, who has gone for 5x his salary as many times as Butler has so far this season. This tool also shows us that Ben McLemore might be a player to look at tonight, as he is the only one of the group to get 6x his salary. I would never use him in a cash lineup, as he hasn’t even gotten 2x his salary in several games, but he could make for an interesting tournament play tonight.

This is why it pays to use these tools, as it uncovers statistical data that helps you differ from the field. That’s how I use the Ceiling and Consistency tool to aid my research process. Hopefully this information helps you tonight and going forward.
