NBC Sports and Boom Fantasy Team Up to Launch 'Sports Predictor' App

NBC Sports and Boom Fantasy are teaming up to launch a new, free-to-play Sports Predictor games app. NBC is offering fans the chance to win up to $50,000 each week, tied to its TV and live-streaming sporting events.

According to a Variety report , the app will let eligible players compete for the chance to win hundreds of thousands of dollars in prizes over the next year, spanning a variety of NBC Sports properties.

“We are excited to introduce NBC Sports’ first free-to-play game, which will allow fans to play along while they watch their favorite NBC Sports action,” said Rob Simmelkjaer, SVP of NBC Sports Ventures. “The new app is a rich, multi-media experience that blends fun and accessible gameplay with NBC Sports’ on-air talent and compelling content offerings.”

It’s a big win for Boom Fantasy, too. The company has raised $8 million from investors including Defy Partners, ZhenFund and Founders Fund.

Premier League Pick ‘Em is the first fantasy game to be offered by the new app and will debut next Wednesday, Dec. 26, alongside the Premier League’s anticipated slate of traditional Boxing Day matches.

Each match week, Premier League Pick ‘Em will feature at least $5,000 in weekly prizes, with a $50,000 grand prize for players who correctly pick the final scores of all five Premier League matches in that week. It will also feature custom content from NBC Sports’ Premier League team of Rebecca Lowe, Robbie Earle, Kyle Martino and Robbie Mustoe.

Additional NBC Sports Predictor games will be announced in the coming weeks. It will be interesting to see which sports NBC will feature but one obvious choice is golf. NBC owns the Golf Channel and recently partnered with the PGA TOUR to offer PGA TOUR LIVE, a direct-to-consumer live streaming product that fans can purchase for either a monthly fee of $9.99 or $64.99 for the season.

The PGA and television networks are constantly trying to find new ways to get young people into golf. By offering fantasy-type games with cash prizes and streaming services, perhaps the PGA will finally be successful in reaching a younger demographic.
