On Sunday evening, the Curry brothers will battle in The Bay when the Brooklyn Nets travel to the Chase Center to play the Golden State Warriors. Entering play, Brooklyn (28-17) owns the fourth-best record in the Eastern Conference. Golden State (23-23) is tied for the seventh-best record in the Western Conference. Ahead of tip-off oddsmakers have the Warriors priced as 7.5-point home favorites on the spread.
Brooklyn Nets
Durant OUT
Tonight, the Nets will play their sixth consecutive game with Kevin Durant out of the lineup. After losing each of their four contests without their leading scorer, Kyrie Irving delivered a heroic 48-point performance on Friday in a 117-106 victory over the Utah Jazz.
Per Cleaning the Glass, the Nets rank in the 90th percentile in offensive efficiency and the 70th percentile in defensive efficiency with Durant on the floor this year, compared to the 7th percentile in offensive efficiency and the 80th percentile in defensive efficiency when he is on the sidelines.
Who will step up in Durant’s absence?
Per CourtIQ, Kyrie Irving (+5.3%) and Seth Curry (+4.0%) see the largest increase in usage with Durant off of the court this season. In these situations, Irving is averaging 29.4 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 5.4 assists per 36 minutes of action. Curry is averaging 18.8 points, 3.7 rebounds, and 3.0 assists per 36 minutes.
Golden State Warriors
Rested Warriors
After losing 121-118 in overtime to the Boston Celtics on Thursday, head coach Steve Kerr decided to rest Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, Draymond Green, and Andrew Wiggins on Friday in Cleveland. As a result, the Dubs’ most important contributors have had two days of rest prior to this contest.
Following a shocking home loss to the Phoenix Suns last week in Curry’s return from injury, Golden State bounced-back with a 29 point victory over the San Antonio Spurs and split their next two road games against the Chicago Bulls and Washington Wizards. Despite losing to the Celtics on Thursday, it appears that the Warriors are shaking off the rust, and are beginning to play their typical dominant brand of basketball.
Dominant at home
In 22 home games this season, Golden State is 17-5, good for the third-best home winning percentage in the Western Conference. Playing at the Chase Center this season, the Warriors have outscored their opponents by 6.2 points per 100 possessions, with only six teams in the league owning a better Net Rating on their home floor.
Klay Thompson has been outstanding at home in 18 games this year, averaging 23.8 points and 4.1 rebounds. Expect him to be heavily involved in the offense against a Brooklyn defense that ranks 15th in opponent three-point attempts in their last five games without Durant.
Nets vs. Warriors – Picks & Predictions
Since Kevin Durant suffered a knee injury earlier this month, the Brooklyn Nets rank 29th in offensive efficiency and 3rd in defensive efficiency, playing at a pace that is near league average. In 22 home games, Golden State ranks 2nd in the NBA in defensive efficiency, allowing only 107.8 points per 100 possessions. Expect a lower-scoring affair in this spot – take the under.
