NFL DFS Backfield Usage: Reviewing Week 9

Few NFL backfields are lucky enough to host workhorse level usage for our NFL DFS options. The snap counts, targets, and opportunity statistics we see for NFL running backs have an impact on our lineups for DraftKings, FanDuel, and Yahoo. NFL DFS is a game where RB opportunity is king, and it is essential to know which situations are expanding or condensing.

Let’s use the RotoGrinders Usage App from JoshADHD to rewind and take stock of how running back usage looked for a few key NFL teams this past week. We’ll want to understand how it could impact projections and projected ownership moving forward.

Today’s NFL DFS Running Back Snaps and Target Report

Chase Edmonds

NFL Team: Arizona Cardinals
Position: RB
Snap Percentage: 95.6%
Team Share of RB Carries: 96.2%
Team Share of Targets: 11.5%

Some people may look at Chase Edmonds underwhelming Week 9 fantasy output and come to the conclusion that he was a bad play. Don’t be that person. While he lacked efficiency, Edmonds saw plenty of opportunity, leading all running backs with 28 touches in Week 9. It’s clear that Edmonds will be the Cardinals’ top dog as long as Kenyan Drake is unable to suit up, which may not be much longer with Drake considered day-to-day heading into Week 10. However, if Drake is once again inactive, Edmonds profiles as one of the top Week 10 running back options against the Buffalo Bills for only $6,300 on DraftKings.

J.D. McKissic

NFL Team: Washington Football Team
Position: RB
Snap Count: 83.3%
Team Share of RB Carries: 27.3%
Team Share of Targets: 35.9%

J.D. McKissic is a curious case that I figured was worth highlighting despite carrying the ball just 3 times against the Giants in Week 9. While McKissic has only topped out at 8 carries this season, he’s been a valuable piece of the Washington Football Team’s passing attack all year and it came to fruition with a 9-catch, 14-target performance last week. McKissic was on the field for 45-of-54 offensive snaps and lined up as a receiver on 19 of those snaps, with 15 of them coming in the slot. McKissic hasn’t scored a touchdown this season and doesn’t carry the ball much, but his role as a pass-catcher gives him some value on PPR sites.

Christian McCaffrey

NFL Team: Carolina Panthers
Position: RB
Snap Count: 71.2%
Team Share of RB Carries: 83.3%
Team Share of Targets: 22.7%

For one week we got Christian McCaffrey back and it was glorious. Despite reports that we could see the Panthers running back workload split in Week 9, McCaffrey dominated touches with 18 rushing attempts and 10 receptions. McCaffrey left the game dinged up with a shoulder injury and his status is in doubt for Week 10 against the Bucs. If McCaffrey is unable to go, Mike Davis should regain a bell-cow role and is a mere $4,000 on DraftKings and $5,400 on FanDuel.
