Roster and Scoring Overview

In need of some insight for setting up your hockey roster? Each Friday, I will be featuring my picks for daily NHL play on Fantasy Sports Live, along with other target picks for the weekend ahead. If you’re new to FSL, it’s important to take a minute and study the format and point system, so you can maximize the value of your picks.

Rosters play 1 goalie and 2 each at LW, RW, C, and D. By far, the most important position here is goaltending. On average, a good goalie with get you about 25 points per game, while an average defenseman will contribute 7 or 8 points. You can expect 12 to 15 points for most forwards each night.

The system is so heavily weighted towards wins, that really, that’s all you should be concerned with for your goalie. Next, identify the 2 cheapest defensemen that have any hope of getting you points. You’re getting much less production from this position, so save the cap room for the money-makers. There are plenty of serviceable options for 25 points or less, and they’re not too much of a downgrade from the high-dollar players anyway.

After filling your crease and blueline, it’s time to spend your money where it matters most, on offense. If you were thrifty with the defense, you shouldn’t have a tough time fielding a stacked offense. Take the superstars (Stamkos, Crosby, etc.) and see what you have left to spend on the rest.

FSL – 575 Point Salary Cap

Pos. Player Cap Hit Notes
G Johan Hedberg 50 pts While I’m typically not shy about spending money at this position, at this point, I’m going with the goalie starting against the Isles. The Devils have finally won a couple, and Hedberg’s in the crease with Brodeur out. Hedberg’s also the cheapest option on the board, so I can stack up on offense.
D Shea Weber 29 pts Still not sure why his valued so low. Weber is a beast.
D Sergei Gonchar 23 pts Same story here. Torn between Gonchar and Keith for my 2nd D. I want to see how Gonchar will do going back to Pittsburgh.
C Steven Stamkos 104 pts I don’t care what format you’re in. Stamkos is guaranteed points. Worth his high price tag.
C Sidney Crosby 90 pts If the Pens are on the schedule, you should always have #87 in your lineup. Expect his stock to rise soon as he’s keeping up with Stamkos.
RW Claude Giroux 65 pts The Flyers rookie continues to provide immense value for his 65 pt hit.
RW Loui Eriksson 80 pts Eriksson has 13 points in his last 10 games. He’s been consistent all year and is a +13 on the season.
LW Daniel Sedin 74 pts Definitely undervalued for an elite winger like Daniel. He has 10 points in his last 7 games and is always a threat to score.
LW Patrick Marleau 53 pts Marleau continues to average a point a game and has 10 goals on the season already. He fit in nicely with my remaining cap space.

Note: Always check to confirm who’s starting in goal an hour or so before game time. If Hedberg doesn’t go (which he should), Fleury may be a decent substitute option coming off his first shutout of the season. He’s also priced at the bargain price of 50 pts.
