Northern Trust Open Picks & Projections - DS
Pebble Beach Pro-Am Recap
Last week provided some mixed results. Of the four picks, only two of them made the cut. However, we did provide you with last week’s winner Jimmy Walker. Last week’s event was rather strange, not only was it played over 3 courses, not only did the pro’s have to play with celebrities and amateurs, but the weather was tough to deal with all week long. This week’s event should be a little easier to predict.
Northern Trust Open Preview
This week’s event will be held at the Riveria Country Club in California. This is a par-71 course that is filled with some of the more unique holes on the PGA tour including a hole with a two-tiered green and another hole with two different fairways. This event was won by John Merrick last year who is actually ranked pretty high in the projections this week.
The Riviera Country Club is one of the tougher courses on the PGA Tour and we should see much lower scores than we have seen the past few weeks. I’m predicting that the winner will be right around the 10-under mark. This event features a full field and will have a cut after the first two rounds. Top 70 plus ties will move on to the weekend.
Northern Trust Open – DS Picks
This week’s pricing is very interesting on DS. There are a lot of big names in the field, but unlike events in the past few weeks, there are 14 golfers that are at least $20,000. With this event expected to be fairly low scoring, it really makes it tough to roster some of the top names. I think this is a week to really target the mid-range options and try to construct a team of players that should all make the cut.
- Charles Howell III: $17,124 – Howell has been my go to guy all season long when I need a mid-range golfer that I can count on to make the cut. He’s entered 9 events this season and made the cut in all 9 tries. He took last week off and he should be well rested and ready to get after it this week. Howell has top-10 finishes in 5 of his last 8 events and looks poised for another strong finish this week. Howell barely missed the cut in this event last year and will look for redemption in this event this year.
- Lee Westwood: $15,461 – It’s hard to pass on Westwood at this price. Even though the world rankings don’t apply much to individual events, he is the 33rd ranked player in the world and he’s only the 25th most expensive player this week. He played well in this event last year with a 21st place finish. Westwood should be a lock to make the cut this week and possibly be in contention come Sunday afternoon.
- Brendan Todd: $13,643 – I like Todd last week and I’m going back to the well again this week. Todd has made the cut in 10 straight events and has finished 26th or better in 7 of those events. The 28 year old is primed to have a huge year. I think he can make some noise in this event and push for another top-25 performance.
- K.J. Choi: $15,543 – Choi is one of those players that you take as a safe bet to make the cut. He rarely, rarely misses cuts. Last week was one of those rare performances and I expect Choi to bounce back nicely this week. Choi actually has pretty good odds to win this event at 61/1.
- Super Sleeper – Greg Chalmers: $8,027 – Chalmers is my super sleeper of the week. He is only $8k on DS this week and would really allow you to stack the rest of your team. Chalmers is one of the best putters in golf and that should translate to some success this week. Chalmers finished in the top-10 at this event last year and has made 5/7 cuts this season. He’s a bit risky, but could really end up paying off if he plays well.
