OHL Classic Expert Picks & Power Rankings
Event Preview
After a terrific finish from Bubba Watson at the WGC-HSBC Championship last week, the PGA Tour heads to Mexico for the OHL Classic. The field for this event leaves much to be desired, but we do have a couple of big names in the field such as Harris English and Charles Howell. The OHL Classic will take place at the El Camaleón Golf Club in Playa Dell Carmen, Mexico. The course is a Par-71 that measures 6,987 yards.
This is one of the shortest courses on the PGA Tour. The fairways here may not be particularly narrow, but they are surrounded by hazards. Bunkers are littered throughout the course and they are extremely difficult to get out of. Bombers do not have a big advantage here as you don’t need to be long off the tee. Favor accuracy over distance in your selections this week. In addition to driving accuracy, I will also be targeting players that rank high in proximity from 100-125 yards out as well as those that can putt.
DraftKings Fantasy Picks

William McGirt: $9,800 – This is a strange week where none of the favorites really stand out as must plays. Do you really have faith in Robert Streb at $11,500? This could be a good week to save some money and target the players under $10k to get a more balanced team. McGirt has made the cut here in each of the last three seasons posting respectable finishes of T-19th, T-26th, and T-45th. Last season, McGirt was ranked 33rd in driving accuracy and 31st in strokes gained putting. I’m projecting a Top-10 finish from ole Willy G this week.
John Huh: $8,600 – After missing the cut at the Frys.com Open, Huh has bounced back nicely with three consecutive cuts made. Huh may not lead the PGA Tour in many categories, but he’s very accurate off the tee (ranked 25th last season) and he’s very accurate from 100-125 yards (ranked 32nd last season). Huh won this event two years ago and backed it up with a solid T-23rd last season. Obviously, the course fits his eye and he’s coming into this event in excellent form.

Will MacKenzie: $8,300 – MacKenzie went on a tear early last season and then seemed to drop off the map. Think Charles Howell, but much worse. He looks primed to make another early season charge in 2013-14 though as he lost in a playoff at the McGladrey Classic a few weeks ago. MacKenzie is a player that you want to target when he is in good form as he typically goes through hot and cold stretches. He has made the cut at this event in three straight appearances and finished with a T-12th last season.
Spencer Levin: $7,200 – Levin has taken a few weeks off, but he’s looked great in his first two events of the season with a T-21st at the Frys.com Open and a T-10th at the Shriners Open. Levin has always been a terrific ball-striker and this course has treated him well. He’s made the cut here in each of his last four tries and finished T-2nd here in 2011. In an event with a weak field, Levin should rise to the top. At $7,200, he’s one of my favorite plays this week.

Jerry Kelly: $6,900 – Kelly typically doesn’t have a lot of great finishes, but he’s a cut-maker and that’s exactly what we are looking for from a player in his price range. Kelly is three for three in cuts made this season and he has made the cut at this event in three of the last four seasons. Last season, Kelly ranked 27th in driving accuracy, 52nd in strokes gained putting, and 55th in proximity from 100-125 yards. On paper, this course fits Kelly’s game perfectly.
Robert Allenby: $6,400 – I’m targeting a lot of “horses for the course” this week and Allenby is another player with a good track record at this event. He finished 2nd here in 2012 and followed it up with a T-16th last season. He is accurate off the tee and very good from 100-125 yards out. He’s the cheapest golfer on the board that I have confidence in to make the cut this week.
Power Rankings
Instead of doing the projections, I decided to try something a little different this week. The biggest complaint about the projections is that people could easily construct a lineup without doing any work on their own. So this week I am going to give my power ranking for every player in the field. This week’s power rankings were based on Vegas odds, history at the event, driving accuracy, proximity from 100-125 yards, and strokes gained putting. Feel free to leave any feedback in the comments section below.
