I have to give props to anyone that expected the course to play this difficult. The average score of the first round was 72.78, which is high for a Par 72 let alone a Par 70. Tiger Woods did his best to warn us before the event started, saying this had a U.S. Open feel to it. Based on how they’ve set up BMW Championships in the past and a few quotes from current members of the course, I expected the winning score to be somewhere in the mid-teens. However, I did say that nobody actually knew how the course was going to play and that we shouldn’t get tied down to a specific type of golfer.
The big takeaway for me wasn’t the length of the course, the firmness of the fairways, or the thick rough — it was how difficult it was to get up and down when players missed greens. If you short-sighted yourself, you likely couldn’t get the ball within 20 feet of the hole even if you were only a yard or two off the green. Putting can be hit or miss between rounds (I mean, Hideki Matsuyama gained 1.3 strokes putting on Thursday), so for showdown over the next three days, I am focused on golfers that are great tee to green and that can avoid bogeys.
