PGA DFS Core Plays: BMW Championship

BMW Championship Preview
I know we’ve seen some runaway performances in the past, but what Dustin Johnson did at the Northern Trust was truly impressive. He not only shot 30-under par (which is incredible in its own right), but won by 11 strokes. Harris English had a great week and would have won with a score of 19-under par most years at TPC Boston, but he was nowhere close to DJ. I should also give credit to Daniel Berger, who seems to play well each and every week. It was a profitable week in DFS for myself, but Jason Day missing the cut did hurt the bottom line quite a bit.
The second leg of the FedEx Cup Championship takes place at Olympia Fields Country Club in Illinois. The course is a Par 70 that measures over 7,300 yards There are only two par fives on the course and both are over 600 yards. Seven of the par fours measure at least 450 yards. The last time the course held a PGA Tour event was the 2003 U.S. Open where Jim Furyk won with a score of eight-under par. The course also hosted the 2015 U.S. Amateur, which was won by Bryson DeChambeau.
In terms of difficulty, the best way to predict a winning score will be to listen to all of the player interviews throughout the week. While the course is very long, it will not have the U.S. Open setup like we did back in 2003. Not only that, but the sport of golf has come a long way over the last 17 years. I don’t expect the PGA Tour to make the course overly challenging, but we won’t know for sure until the tournament kicks off. I’m looking for golfers that are long off the tee and/or good with their long irons. The contoured greens here feature a mix of bent and poa if you like to look at putting splits.
From a DFS perspective, we should treat this week like a WGC event. There are only 70 golfers in the field and we will not have a cut. This makes scoring more important and consistency in terms of cut making less important. The stacked field makes the pricing seem soft and when that happens, I generally try to take more of a balanced approach. However, the no cut aspect lets us feel more comfortable about going the stars and scrubs route. My advice is to find your favorite lineup where all six golfers have top 20 type of upside.
