PGA DFS Core Plays: Corales Championship

Top-ranked grinder, Notorious, breaks down his favorite daily fantasy golf plays at various salary ranges for the coming week’s golf tournament. Who should you be building around? Find out below.

Corales Championship

Before we get into this week’s glorified Korn Ferry Tour event, we have to cover the domination by Bryson DeChambeau at the U.S. Open. I am willing to admit that he wasn’t on my radar heading into the week, as his form was awfully spotty over the last couple of months. He was in great form before the restart and in great form after the restart, but his game didn’t seem to be in good enough shape to win a U.S. Open. I should have put more stock into his pre-tournament comments about him hitting driver as much as possible and that he was able to play out of the rough when he had a wedge in his hand. He ended up being the only golfer under par for the week and won by an astounding six strokes. We all know he’s the “mad scientist,” but take a few minutes and read this Bryson thread on Twitter. It’s really amazing seeing him transform himself and potentially the way golf is played moving forward.

This week we head to the Dominican Republic for the Corales Championship. We’ve seen two PGA Tour events and two Korn Ferry Tour events played at this course over the last five years and it should play like the other coastal courses we’ve seen at the Puerto Rico Open and the RSM Classic. All three courses feature seashore paspalum greens if you are looking for comp courses in addition to the limited course history at Corales Golf Club. The course is a Par 72 that measures over 7,200 yards. While you can find hazards here, this is a wide open golf course. Fairways are easy to hit, scrambling is much easier than tour average, and this should turn into a birdie fest. We can expect the winning score to be somewhere in the range of 20-under par.

We don’t have a true course fit this week, as we don’t have any ShotLink data to work with from this event. We get the faux Shot Tracker that just says where each golfer is hitting from and not where they are at on the course. I know some shorter hitters have contended and even won here in the past, but I am giving an edge to distance off the tee and if you can find a bomber that putts well, even better. When fairways and greens are easy to hit, it often comes down to a putting contest. You can also just play the best golfers, that’s always a reasonable strategy as well. The main defense of the course is the wind, so check the weather report on Wednesday evening to see if there are any tee time advantages.
