3M Open

We are coming off of a fantastic week of golf at St. Andrews and now have a bit of a hangover, as we head back to the states for the 3M Open. While the conviction plays weren’t anything special last week, we did have Cameron Smith, Tommy Fleetwood, and Tony Finau as core plays. Smith obviously made the huge run on Sunday to secure his first major title (what a two-putt from behind the bunker on 17), Fleetwood made a charge into the top five, and Finau finished with one of the best rounds on Sunday. Overall, it was a solid week of DFS, it was a solid week of betting, and it was one of the best tournaments of the year from a viewing perspective. I’m sad that we don’t get another major championship for nine months, but we were lucky to have four amazing ones this year.

As for this week, TPC Twin Cities has hosted the 3M Open for each of the last three years. The event has produced significantly different winners, as Cameron Champ, Michael Thompson, and Matthew Wolff have all won here. However, two of the three are bombers and we’ve also seen the likes of Tony Finau and Bryson DeChambeau play well here over the years. This has led many to believe this is a bomber’s course, even though there are water hazards in play on 15 of the 18 holes. The official scorecard has this course as a Par 71 that measures 7,431 yards. There are three par fives that should be reachable by the majority of the field, as all three measure less than 600 yards.

When compared to other courses, everything at TPC Twin Cities is slightly easier than tour average — off the tee, approach, around the green, and putting. The fairways here are wide and easy to hit and the bentgrass greens here are large and easy to hit. While the hazards will cause of a lot penalty strokes, the birdies made will more than make up for it. I’m not sure there’s a strong course fit this week, but if I had to choose one above the others, I would go with the bomber and putter narrative. I will personally be mixing in some shorter hitters as well, but they better be prolific birdie makers.
