PGA DFS Core Plays - DraftKings & FanDuel: Genesis Scottish Open

Top-ranked DFS player, Notorious, breaks down his favorite PGA DFS plays at various salary ranges for the coming week’s golf tournament. Who should you be building around? Find out below.

Genesis Scottish Open

J.T. Poston went wire-to-wire at the John Deere Classic to collect his second win on the PGA Tour. While there were plenty of landmines in DFS, it felt good to pick a +5500 winner. We will try to keep it going this week with the Genesis Scottish Open, which is now a co-sanctioned event between the PGA Tour and the DP World Tour. With this being the week before the Open Championship, we have one of the strongest fields in quite some time. This is a good week to deviate from your usual research routine, as relying on standard stat models could lead you in the wrong direction. This is a different part of the world, this is a different type of golf, and much of the field spends the majority of their time playing in Europe.

The Renaissance Golf Club has held the Scottish Open in each of the last three years. While I don’t hate the idea of looking at Scottish Opens before 2019, keep in mind that we only have three years of course history for this course in particular. This is a links-style course that measures 7,293 yards. While it plays as a Par 71, there are four par fives and five par threes on the scorecard. The difficulty of the course hinges entirely on the weather. Bernd Wiesberger won in 2019 with a score of 22-under par, Aaron Rai won in 2020 with a score of 11-under par, and Min Woo Lee won last year with a score of 18-under par. Based on the early forecast, Thursday will yield some very low scores while Friday could present a real challenge for the field.

The greens here are large and are easy to hit. Approach play will be critical, but this isn’t your standard target golf that we see so often on the PGA Tour. I wish I had a stronger take on what statistics to target this week, but I’m not relying on stats as much as usual. I am focused on form, course history, links experience, and talent. This is a great week to stray away from the names that we see and target so often in PGA DFS. We can’t really get away from the PGA Tour regulars at the top of the board, but I will certainly be looking to target more of the Euro Tour regulars in the mid-range and for value.
