PGA DFS Core Plays - DraftKings & FanDuel: Mexico Open

Top-ranked DFS player, Notorious, breaks down his favorite PGA DFS plays at various salary ranges for the coming week’s golf tournament. Who should you be building around? Find out below.

Mexico Open

We have a new tournament on tap this week and judging by early-week sentiment, very few are actually looking forward to the event. There’s always a natural letdown after the year’s first major and to roll out the Zurich Classic and the Mexico Open in back-to-back weeks seems to have people losing interest. Even though I don’t expect to have ShotLink data this week, this could be one of the most profitable weeks of the year if we put in the extra time. With this being a new course and with the event having a weak field, most will just use their optimizers and be on their way this week. We often view the majors as the most profitable given how much casual money comes flowing into contests, but this week could be profitable strictly thanks to many not putting in the effort.

This week the PGA Tour heads to Puerto Vallarta for the Mexico Open. Vidanta Nuevo Vallarta is a Par 71 that measures 7,456 yards. It features four par fives and five par threes, so the course is a bit unique in terms of the layout. It’s also unique in the fact that there are no houses or buildings on the course. To get to the course, you have to cross a suspension bridge. The course sits right along the Ameca River and also has a number of lakes that come into play. In total, water appears to be in play on 13 of the 18 holes. The grass featured this week is paspalum, which is often seen on the coastal tracks in many of the alternate field events on the PGA Tour.

To be honest, we are flying blind this week when it comes to course fit. We know the course is long and we know the fairways are wide, so in theory this should set up well for those that are long off the tee. This is a resort course, so it could set up well for birdie makers. However, we aren’t going to know which type of golfer it suits or how difficult it is going to play until the tournament starts. I am going to stay away from course fit for the most part, especially if we get a lot of groupthink in the industry saying this is a bomber’s course. In general, the more we don’t know, the more we should stray away from popular opinion.

Similar to last week, I am going to let my model do the hard work for me. It likes quite a few golfers that are expected to be low-owned, so this could be a very good or very bad week for yours truly.
