THE PLAYERS
We have arrived at the self-proclaimed fifth major of the year. I suppose this would be the first major of the year if we are going in order. THE PLAYERS is one of the biggest events of the season and it has the largest purse ($20 million) of any outside of the Tour Championship. TPC Sawgrass is a place that I am very familiar with, as I was lucky enough to play it a few years back (thank you, FanDuel). It was cold and windy and unlike any course I had ever played. I stopped keep track of my score, but it would have been well into the triple digits. I do know that I got a seven on the par three 17th after hitting my first two shots into the water.
TPC Sawgrass is a Pete Dye design that measures 7,256 yards. It’s a Par 72 that features four par fives and a drivable (on a few days) par four. These five holes provide a lot of scoring opportunities, but this course is loaded with landmines. In fact, water is in play on 17 of the 18 holes. Precision is key if you want to have success around these parts. The fairways are fairly easy to hit on average, but that’s largely because many golfers club down on a lot of the holes. While accuracy is more important than distance, the longer hitters will be hitting shorter clubs off the tee so it’s hard to simply trust driving accuracy as a predictive stat this week.
