Ladies and gentlemen, golf is back!
It felt like years without golf and I suppose it is technically a new year. The PGA Tour kicks off the calendar year with the Sentry Tournament of Champions. In the past, you had to win a PGA Tour event to get entry into the field, but the tour decided to include those that made it to the Tour Championship as well. While there are only 42 golfers teeing it up this week in Hawaii, this is a very stacked field. There will not be a cut this week, which means all golfers are guaranteed to play four rounds (barring any withdrawals… knock on wood).
The Plantation Course at Kapalua is a rare Par 73 that only features four par fives. To my recollection, it is the only course on the PGA Tour rotation with only three par threes. The length is a bit deceiving, as 7,600 yards as sea level seems daunting. However, with all of the elevation changes from the tee boxes and with the rolling fairways, we’ll see quite a few drives over 400 yards this week. In fact, three of the top 10 longest drives all last season were recorded at this event. Historically, this course rewards good drivers of the ball and golfers that are aggressive with their irons.
