PGA DFS Core Plays: Shriners Hospitals for Children Open

Shriners Hospitals for Children Open

I’m not sure what was a bigger story from last week, that Sergio Garcia won for the first time on the PGA Tour since the Masters or that he admitted to putting with his eyes closed for the last few years. Honestly, how have we not caught this on camera until now? I always love seeing elite talents bounce back after a rough stretch and Garcia played two great rounds of golf on the weekend. He was tied for the lead with Peter Malnati heading into his final hole (which was the hardest on the course) and he stuck his approach shot to two feet. He holed the short putt and found himself back in the winner’s circle.

We now turn our attention to the Las Vegas swing, as we get the Shriners Open and the CJ Cup over the next two weeks. This week’s event will be held at TPC Summerlin, which is a Par 71 that measures 7,255 yards. The course features three par fives, two of which should be reachable by most of the field. The fairways are fairly difficult to hit on average (59%), while the greens are much easier to hit (72%) than tour average. When you notice the driving distance here over the last five years (way higher than tour average), it’s safe to assume the golfers aren’t afraid to play out of the rough.

Even though the winning score can get fairly low at this event, scrambling is a key statistic here each and every year. It’s difficult to get up and down when you miss these greens and we’ve seen a ton of great scramblers near the top of the leaderboard at TPC Summerlin. The greens are large in size and feature bentgrass, while the tee boxes, fairways, and rough all feature bermudagrass. I am viewing this as more of a second shot course where golfers will have to be great with their short game in order to contend. More often than not, it turns into a putting contest when everyone is hitting greens at a high clip.
