Sony Open
It’s great to get off to a nice start each year and that’s exactly what Harris English and Ryan Palmer helped me do at the Sentry Tournament of Champions. It was a good week of DFS and a good week of betting. We’ll look to keep it going in Hawaii, although this event will take place in Honolulu. We go from a Par 72 that measures 7,600 yards to a Par 70 that measures just over 7,000 yards. The two courses are in the same area, but play completely different. The Plantation Course is generally a bomber’s fest that features the widest fairways on the PGA Tour, while Waialae Country Club plays more like Harbour Town and Colonial Country Club.
If you remember anything about Harbour Town or Colonial, accuracy is much more of a premium than distance. Approach play will be key and you generally need to have a good short game to contend. Here is a quick list of the golfers in this field that have the best course history — Charles Howell, Webb Simpson, Marc Leishman, Zach Johnson, Brian Stuard, Cameron Smith, Chez Reavie, and Matt Kuchar. Those are not bombers, those are plodders that can get red-hot with their irons and/or get hot on and around the greens. This generally plays as one of the easiest courses on tour and with little wind in the forecast, that should be the case again this time around.
