PGA DFS Core Plays: The Honda Classic
Top-ranked grinder, Notorious, breaks down his favorite daily fantasy golf plays at various salary ranges for the coming week’s golf tournament. Who should you be building around? Find out below.
Core Plays
The core plays were fine last week, but they didn’t quite do enough to make a difference in tournaments. It was a down week for yours truly, as two of my fades in MME were Bryson DeChambeau and Patrick Reed. With them finishing one-two, I had no shot in large-field tournaments. This week we head to Florida for the Honda Classic. If I had to sum up the event in one word it would be “carnage.” Water is in play on 13 of the holes (26 water hazards in total) and the course is exposed to the wind (very few trees on the property). The greens are tough to hit, it’s not the easiest place to scramble, and there are only two par fives. This has been the toughest Par 70 on the PGA Tour in five of the last seven seasons.
As far as the type of golfer to target, approach is a lot more important than off the tee this week. Distance is always beneficial, but it’s more important to keep the ball in play than it is to bomb it. With so many water hazards and penalizing bunkers, keeping the ball in the fairway is goal number one off the tee. Given the fact that the greens are tough to hit, scrambling will be very important. The greens themselves are made of Bermuda grass, but I’m actually not looking at putting splits this week. Bad putters can play well here, as this is a difficult track where the winning score will be around 10-under par. Basically, saving par is often more important than making birdies, which benefits the elite tee-to-green golfers.
