Tour Championship
Before we get into a breakdown of the season finale, we have to talk about the playoff between Patrick Cantlay and Bryson DeChambeau. I needed Cantlay to win (both for betting and DFS) and thought he was dead in the water on the 17th hole. Bryson had a one streak lead and was just short of the green and Cantlay hit his tee shot into the water. The next 20 minutes were incredible. Cantlay stuck a wedge, Bryson flubbed his chip and missed his par, and Cantlay made a nice putt to save bogey. He remained one back heading into the 18th hole. He hit a nice approach shot to about 20 feet, but it once again appeared over after Bryson hit it to about 10 feet on the same line. Cool as ever, Cantlay drains his long birdie putt and Bryson missed on the low side.
In the playoffs, it was more of the same. Bryson seemed to have the advantage after every drive and every approach shot, but Cantlay wouldn’t go away. There was one hole where Bryson’s drive found the water, but he made an incredible par to force another playoff hole. Ultimately, Cantlay got the job done by draining yet another long putt. Not only was this incredible television, but the two clearly dislike each other, which only amped up the intensity. As a Cantlay backer, I know how many breaks we got along the way. He finished the week gaining over 14 strokes putting and that didn’t include the long ones he made in extra holes. I’m feeling good heading into the Tour Championship, as we had Tony Finau as a core play at the Northern Trust and Cantlay as a core play last week.
