Tournament Preview
After an ugly week at the Charles Schwab Challenge, it was good to get back in the swing of things at the RBC Heritage. The three core plays were Webb Simpson (), Matt Kuchar, and Ian Poulter. In the secondary plays, I wrote up Bryson DeChambeau, Dustin Johnson, and Matthew Fitzpatrick. And in the wildcard plays, Sergio Garcia came through with a big finish. The plays weren’t perfect though, as Kevin Kisner, Louis Oosthuizen, and Jason Day did miss the cut. If you have been tailing the bets, we hit Simpson at 30-to-1 to bring the season total to +59 units.
This week we head to Connecticut for the Travelers Championship. I can’t exactly put my finger on why, but this is one of my favorite stops on the PGA Tour. TPC River Highlands is a tree-lined Pete Dye design, but you can score well here in good conditions. The course measures just over 6,800 yards, which makes it one of the shortest on tour. There are only two par fives and most of the field should be able to reach them in two. There is also a drive-able par four that is less than 300 yards. This is your classic risk/reward hole with water on the left side of the green.
While shorter hitters can compete here, golfers will be able to hit more drivers than they did last week at Harbour Town. I’m looking for great ball strikers that have had success here and/or on bentgrass and poa greens. The greens here are very small, so being able to scramble will come in handy when golfers miss greens. It sounds like there has been rain in the area recently and it could rain on Wednesday as well. If that’s the case, we can expect a very soft and very gettable course. As of Tuesday afternoon, there doesn’t appear to be a weather edge this week, but make sure to check the forecast on Wednesday night.
