Wyndham Championship Preview
First off, huge congratulations is in order. Collin Morikawa is an absolute star that hit some of the most memorable shots of the year. He’s been a professional on the PGA Tour for around a year and he has two more wins than missed cuts. After an incredible week of golf in San Francisco, the PGA Tour heads to Sedgefield Country Club in North Carolina. The field is stronger than you might expect for it being a week after the year’s first major. The cut rule goes back to top 65 and ties, so I doubt we’ll see 25% of lineups get 6-of-6 golfers through to the weekend like we did at the PGA Championship.
This week’s course is a Par 70 that measures 7,131 yards. It’s a classic Donald Ross design that should turn into a birdie fest. In terms of difficulty, it’s been one of the 14 easiest courses on tour (out of 50) each of the last five years. With little to no wind in the forecast and rain throughout the week, the winning score could end up being 25-under par. In fact, the winner has reached the 20-under mark at this event in each of the last four years. Compared to PGA Tour averages, the fairways are easy to hit, the greens are easy to hit, and scrambling is pretty straightforward.
While it never hurts to have length off the tee, it’s certainly not a requirement here. This is a short course by PGA Tour standards and there are a number of holes where golfers will choose to club down off the tee. This is a second shot golf course where you have to strike it well and putt it well in order to be in contention. Webb Simpson is the perfect example of the type of golfer that excels at Sedgefield Country Club. In fact, he likes this event so much that he named his daughter Wyndham. If you can find the golfers that will gain strokes on approach and putting, you’ll be in good shape this week.
