Tournament and Course Notes for the BMW Championship

Caves Valley hosted the 2021 BMW Championship, where Patrick Cantlay won with a score of -27
There wasn’t a single player in the field who finished over par that week, and it played as the 2nd-easiest course on TOUR that year
However, the course will not play the same this week as it did in 2021 — two of the par 5s were converted to long par 4s, and the course has added 60 yards of length to the scorecard
Other changes include: turf replacement on the entire course, changes to the holes to make them slightly more difficult, and more firm conditions overall
The fairways here are quite wide (40 yards), and golfers hit driver here a ton in 2021 (79%), so it should be bombs away this week
To add to the distance narrative, Patrick Cantlay, Rory McIlroy, Bryson DeChambeau, and Dustin Johnson all finished in the top 6 here in 2021
The greens are below average in size (5,200 square feet) and feature pure bentgrass
Don’t be fooled by the 2021 leaderboard; this should be a tough test of golf. Not only is this now a par 70 compared to a par 72, but the changes to the course have all made it more difficult
Solid tee-to-green play should be considered a premium this week
I’m also looking at bombers, good long iron players, and golfers who play well in the Northeast
Once again, there will not be a cut this week. I recommend chasing upside over safety
