Tournament and Course Notes for the TOUR Championship
- The season finale kicks off in Atlanta this week with $20 million up for grabs (must be nice)
- Unlike past editions, the event won’t feature starting strokes
- I have mixed feelings about this… the starting strokes took more than half the field out of contention immediately, but they also rewarded golfers who have played well all season
- Be careful when looking at course history this week, as many leaderboards you’ll find include starting strokes (the table below excludes starting strokes)
- The good news is that in 2028, the TOUR Championship will feature match play
- East Lake Golf Club is a Par 70 that measures 7,440 yards
- It’s a Donald Ross design that requires precise iron play and a solid all-around game
- The course did have a restoration before the 2024 edition of the event
- It has been one of the 10 easiest courses on TOUR in each of the last 2 years
- The winning score (without starting strokes) has been between -17 and -19 in each of the last 4 years
- The fairways are tree-lined and average in width (30-32 yards)
- This is a driver-heavy course, but hitting fairways is more important than distance
- The Greens in Regulation rate from the fairway was 36% higher than it was from the rough last year
- The fairways feature zoysiagrass, while the greens and rough feature bermudagrass
- The greens are average in size (6,200 square feet) and lightning fast (13 on the stimpmeter)
- The scrambling success rate (66%) is much easier than the TOUR average
