Arnold Palmer Invitational
Welcome to another GPP breakdown for this week’s golf tournament!
We are coming off a wild week at the Honda Classic, which featured one of the strangest leaderboards we have seen in a while. While Chris Kirk and Shane Lowry weren’t surprises at the top, a weak field led to some surprising names (like a Monday qualifier in Ryan Gerard and veterans like Zach Johnson and David Lingmerth) peppering the top 15.
This week, we head to Bay Hill for another edition of the Arnold Palmer Invitational — and we have a MUCH stronger field assembled for this one. Bay Hill is another challenging course that rarely sees a lot of golfers get into the double digits under par itself. As for the course, Bay Hill is a par 72 layout that has plenty trouble lurking to punish poor shots. Most of the scoring will be done on the par fives, and we do have four of them at this course. All of those measure at 590 yards or less, and they are generally the four easiest holes on the course. Limiting damage will be the key on the remaining holes. To show that point, in last year’s edition of this tournament, not a single par three or par four hole yielded a scoring average under par. Those 14 holes played to an average of +3.1 strokes over par per round. Meanwhile, the par fives averaged around -1.2 strokes under par per round. This course is truly a matter of “hanging on” with the other holes and scoring as much as possible on the par fives. It’s rare to see a par 72 layout play so difficult, but that’s the case with Bay Hill.
