Honda Classic
Welcome back, golf fans! The Honda Classic is upon us this week, and it marks the start of this year’s Florida swing. We have a very weak field assembled here, and this is a tough week to build lineups. Alas, though, everyone is dealing with the same playing field!
Over the last 16 years at this event, the winning score has only gotten into double digits under par five times. Sepp Straka was one of those players with a 10-under par finish a year ago, but he barely got there. The year prior, only Matt Jones got there with nobody else better than seven under par. On two of the other occasions, the second place finisher was only eight under. On the final occasion, there were two other players at ten under. When you add that up, that means only SEVEN total players have shot -10 or better here over the last 16 years — and three of those came in the same year. Par is a valuable score around a very challenging PGA National track, and that will certainly be the case this year in another weak field. I know we have seen a ton of birdie fests to start the 2023 calendar year, but we are almost certainly not going to see that again. The rough is being allowed to be grown out to lengths that we generally only see in majors.
