Welcome back, golf fans! We have a strange event on the calendar this week with the first edition of the Palmetto Championship at Congaree Golf Club in Ridgeland, SC.
Why is it strange? Well, this event is being held in South Carolina on the week before the U.S. Open — which is being played at Torrey Pines all the way out in California. As such, we have a very weak field lined up for this event.
In addition, we have to worry about withdrawal risk for several golfers. Many players are included in this field but managed to make it through the 36 hole U.S. Open qualifiers on Monday. I would expect a few of those players to drop out of this event in order to focus on next week’s major, especially after they played 36 holes on Monday. Here is a list of qualifiers that could end up withdrawing:
