The PLAYERS Championship
Hey, Grinders! Welcome to the GPP breakdown for The PLAYERS Championship. This tournament is commonly known as the ‘fifth major’ — but remember that it is now the first one to be played each year. With the PGA Tour schedule changes that were enacted a few years back, this tournament got moved from May to March. There will be shot by shot video available for every shot of the tournament, so the coverage of this event cannot be topped. It should be a fantastic week!
As usual, TPC Sawgrass will be the host venue. In general, ball striking is the name of the game here, as is often the case with “major championship” venues. Sawgrass is a relatively short par 72 course by today’s PGA Tour standards, but it will play a bit longer than usual thanks to the cooler March weather. In fact, after rain moves through on Thursday and Friday, high temperatures on Saturday are not expected to get out of the 50’s. The prevailing wind generally blows in a different direction at TPC Sawgrass in March than it does in May, so we can’t take pre-2019 history as gospel with the calendar change. In particular, the iconic par three 17th will generally play into the wind in March. There will be plenty of splash down water balls as we go throughout the weekend, and that will be very interesting come Sunday afternoon (or Monday should the weather cause lengthy delays).
