PGA DFS GPP Breakdown: Wyndham Championship

Wyndham Championship

Welcome, golf fans! We have the final event of the regular season on tap for this week, with the FedEx Cup Playoffs beginning next week. It should be an action packed week of golf with a lot of movement on the leaderboard.

As for this week’s event, we can expect a birdie fest at Sedgefield Country Club for the Wyndham Championship. This is a relatively easy par 70 course, as it has played as one of the easier par 70 tracks on Tour for the last several years. Prior to last year where the weather was a bit breezy (with a -15 winner and a six way playoff), the winning score had checked in at either -21 or -22 in each of the last five editions of this event. Par 70 courses usually don’t play as massive birdie fests, but that’s not the case with this one. It is worth noting that accuracy does take on some importance at this course, as the green in regulation numbers dip substantially for golfers who miss the fairway off the tee. I will not be weighting distance at all, as you will see a lot of players club down off the tee in order to try and hit more fairways. Current form and some course history are a nice bonus, especially when they intersect with one golfer.

Lastly, we might be able to consider the motivation angle. This is the last week for golfers to qualify for the FedEx Cup Playoffs. The top 125 golfers in the standings after this week making it into the playoffs. Those that are on the playoff bubble might have a little more focus this week. However, we haven’t really seen much correlation with that in the past. Some golfers play better under pressure than others. I would only use this as a tiebreaker, at best.

Let’s get to some of my favorite GPP picks!

Shane Lowry
DraftKings: $10,600
FanDuel: $11,800
Yahoo: $46

It always used to be Webb Simpson as the top play at this event, and we certainly can’t argue with Simpson’s history at Sedgefield. However, Simpson is wildly overpriced given that course history, especially when you consider that he is having a poor season. Instead, I’ll gladly pivot to Lowry, a similar type of golfer who sets up well for this course. Lowry ranks third in this field in approach play over the last 36 rounds, and he has a pair of top 25’s in two of his last three trips to this event. I fully expect Lowry to be in the mix heading into Sunday.

Russell Henley
DraftKings: $9,800
FanDuel: $10,900
Yahoo: $39

Here’s what I wrote about Henley in this very space last week: “There isn’t a whole lot of buzz around Henley right now, but much of that is because we haven’t seen him in a regular PGA Tour event since May 8th. His last three starts have all been in majors, where he made the cut with underwhelming finishes in two of the three. His results are skewed by the fact that he has generally been playing in more difficult events. If we go back to the late winter / early spring, we see more consistent results from him. He still ranks 4th in this field in approach play and 8th in tee to green play over his last 36 rounds, and these are the types of tournaments where he generally excels.” He went on to post a solid 10th place finish at the Rocket Mortgage Classic, and now he has momentum heading into an event where he has finished inside the top ten in each of the last two editions. Yes, please!

Harold Varner III
DraftKings: $9,000
FanDuel: $10,500
Yahoo: $39

Varner only played in one event in the month of July, finishing T28 at The Open Championship. He should be rested and ready to go for the playoff season, and he grades out well statistically. Varner ranks 7th in this field in tee to green play, 5th in approach, and 6th in around the green over the last 36 rounds. He has also made the cut in each of the last five editions of the Wyndham Championship. He has a bit of an unfair reputation as a bomber for some reason, but he can excel on these types of courses. As always, it comes down to whether or not he can avoid that one “blow up” round that he often has. If he can do that, he could be in the mix come Sunday afternoon.

Si Woo Kim
DraftKings: $8,800
FanDuel: $10,300
Yahoo: $37

I almost never recommend Si Woo Kim in my content. I almost certainly never recommend Si Woo Kim when he’s going to be somewhat popular. I feel like this is doomed from the start, but I’ve got to be interested this week. He always tends to play well on the same types of courses, and Sedgefield definitely suits his eye. Kim has finished inside the top FIVE here in three consecutive years. He also comes into this event on the heels of back-to-back top 15 finishes at The Open Championship and Rocket Mortgage Classic. The stats look solid across the board, and we know the upside is there. He’s a great mid-range option this week.

Adam Long
DraftKings: $7,700
FanDuel: $9,600
Yahoo: $22

On a per dollar basis, you can really make a case for Adam Long potentially being the best value in the field this week. He ranks 8th in this field in total strokes gained, 14th in tee to green, and 11th in ball striking over the last 36 rounds. He is priced solidly below the average amount that we have available to spend per golfer on all sites. Long also rolls into this event on the heels of four straight top 25 finishes on Tour, so the form is there. There’s little to dislike in his current profile, and I will happily target him at modest ownership this week.

C.T. Pan
DraftKings: $7,400
FanDuel: $8,900
Yahoo: $27

Pan has been one of the more popular value selections over the past few weeks, but that ownership is going to erode after he played just horrible golf a week ago. He shot 76-72 to miss the cut by seven strokes. Everyone is entitled to a poor showing every now and again, though, and Pan had previously made nine of his last ten cuts. With ownership likely back into the single digits, this could be a great buy low opportunity. His game fits the course well, and he has made the cut in four straight appearances here while gaining nearly 14 strokes compared to field average in the process.

Callum Tarren
DraftKings: $7,300
FanDuel: $8,800
Yahoo: $20

I’m not sure what else Callum Tarren has to do in order to either A) get a price bump or B) become the chalkiest value on the board. As long as neither of them are true (he’s still cheap and still going to be sub-10% owned), I’ll just keep playing him. Tarren has now finished inside the top 25 in each of his last four events on North American soil, and he also finished 31st at the U.S. Open. His game fits this course nicely, and I expect him to keep rolling along this week.

Justin Lower
DraftKings: $6,700
FanDuel: $7,400
Yahoo: $20

This pick obviously carries plenty of risk, but I’m intrigued by Lower’s recent run of form. he has now made the cut in nine of his last twelve starts, with four top 35 finishes in that mix. That doesn’t sound like much, but he’s one of the better golfers you will find priced near the bargain basement range this week. While his overall statistics are merely average, he has been putting the ball with a lot of confidence. In a tournament that could turn into a putting contest with a lot of birdies, that’s not a bad thing when you factor in his improved form.
