ZOZO Championship
Welcome back to the PGA DFS GPP breakdown! We have the ZOZO Championship this week, an event that will mark a brief stop in Asia for the 2022-2023 season. This is the only Asian stop on the schedule this year, so there is no full “Asian swing” this fall. This tournament is a co-branded event between the PGA Tour and the Japanese Tour, so several slots in the field will go to top Japanese golfers. It will be a no cut event with 78 golfers in the field, and all of them will get to play four rounds barring withdrawal from the tournament.
As for the host course for the event, Narashino Country Club’s Championship Course will be the host venue for the third time. It hosted back in 2019 before the COVID pandemic hit and hosted again last year. Narashino is a unique par 70 layout that contains 10 par fours, 5 par threes, and 3 par fives. Par three scoring might factor in my decision making for one of the first times that I can remember. Outside of that factor, this is a relatively tight layout that does not require distance off the tee. In terms of comparisons on U.S. soil, Harbour Town Golf Links is the one that pops to the forefront of my mind, but it’s not a perfect comparison. I have also seen TPC Sawgrass and Scottsdale used as correlative courses.
