PGA DFS Picks: DraftKings & FanDuel Core Plays for the 3M Open

While it’s sad that the four majors are all in the rearview mirror, we still have some fun golf tournaments coming up over the next few months. While the 3M Open doesn’t draw the strongest field, I do like the event quite a bit. It’s one of those courses where birdies come in bunches, but mistakes are punished. Water is in play on 15 of the 18 holes at TPC Twin Cities, which gives it more of a Florida feel than a Minnesota feel.

The course is a Par 71 that measures 7,431 yards. The winning score has ranged from -15 to -24 over the last 5 years. In terms of difficulty, this usually ends up being around the TOUR average, but the wind will determine how difficult the course ends up playing. In tranquil conditions, the water hazards aren’t nearly as intimidating. The early forecast calls for rain on Wednesday night and very little wind the rest of the week. If this holds, we can expect some low scores, but make sure to see what Roth has to say before lock on our PGA weather page.

We’ve seen a mix of winners at this event in the past. While this is a driver-heavy course, accuracy has played more of a role than pure distance. Essentially, looking for golfers who gain strokes with their driver (whether it be through accuracy or distance) is probably your best bet off the tee. The greens are large and easy to hit in regulation (especially when the wind is down). This emphasizes approach play and de-emphasizes around-the-green play.

While making birdies will be the name of the game this week, I’m placing a bigger emphasis on Bogey Avoidance. I think most of the field will have an easy time hitting these greens in regulation, so targeting golfers who can avoid mistakes (and the water hazards) is the strategy I’m looking at. I will also be looking for golfers who are good total drivers, good iron players, and good putters.

Pendrith missed the cut at The Open last week, but it was right on the number. Before that, he had made 7 straight cuts, with 4 top-25 finishes during that stretch. He’s a bomber off the tee (who is more accurate than you might expect) and an excellent iron player. He’s also capable of having big weeks with the putter, which is why he’s been able to play well on both easy and difficult courses this year. He’s a good starting point for lineups, as his price isn’t prohibitive.
