I hope everyone enjoyed their week off from PGA DFS. Even though it’s the fall and most of these events have weak fields, I will always say that any golf sweat is better than no golf sweat. This week, we head to Bermuda for the Butterfield Bermuda Championship. The good news is that there are 120 golfers in the field, which means we will have a cut sweat on Friday. The bad news is that we won’t have Shot Tracker.

Editor’s Note: For more tournament notes, recent form, and course notes for the Butterfield Bermuda Championship, check out this week’s PGA DFS First Look.

Port Royal Golf Course is a par 71 that measures only 6,828 yards. On a par-adjusted basis, this is one of the shortest courses on the PGA TOUR. It’s extremely rare to see a course where Strokes Gained: Off-the-Tee, Driving Distance, and Driving Accuracy are all devalued, but that’s exactly the case this week. Essentially, you just need to keep the ball in play off the tee. There are plenty of less-than-driver holes, so off the tee this week is all about positioning.

The greens here are large (8,000 square feet) and feature bermudagrass. They are typically tough to hit in regulation, and I expect that to be the case this week. The forecast calls for 20+ MPH sustained winds for 3 of the 4 days, so a tidy short game will come in handy. I’m placing the biggest weights on Strokes Gained: Approach and Strokes Gained: Around-the-Green. I’m also going to bump up Bogey Avoidance.

There isn’t a strong course fit here, as we’ve seen all types of golfers contend here. Course history never hurts, but it hasn’t been super predictive at Port Royal Golf Course.

James is around +1100 in the outright market and playing some incredible golf at the moment. In this weak field, he should be more expensive. Over the last 6 months, he’s been in the top 15 in this field in all four of the Strokes Gained categories. He’s also 1st in my Expected Hole Performance metric. Unlike a lot of the up-and-comers these days, he’s actually extremely accurate off the tee, which should really come in handy this week. He basically won everything imaginable in college, and he’s racked up 3 straight top-5 finishes on TOUR. It’s only a matter of time before he gets his first win.
