PGA DFS Picks: DraftKings & FanDuel Core Plays for the Butterfield Bermuda Championship

As sad as it is to write, we only have two more PGA TOUR events until January. Before we dive into this week’s event, let’s quickly recap the World Wide Technology Championship. Ben Griffin caught fire on the back nine on Sunday and picked up his third win of the year (if you count the team event). He has quickly turned into one of the most consistent golfers on the PGA TOUR. With his added distance, it’ll be interesting to see whether his game translates to the majors. It was a hit-or-miss week for the picks, as Griffin, Victor Perez, Matti Schmid, and Eric Cole all played great. Unfortunately, there were a few missed cuts mixed into the picks as well.

This week, the PGA TOUR heads to the small island of Bermuda. Despite the island being only 21 square miles, it features 7 golf courses. The important one for us is Port Royal Golf Course, which has held this event for several years. That usually means we have a lot of data to work with, but the PGA TOUR doesn’t have ShotLink data for this event, which means we don’t have any strokes gained metrics from past events. To make matters worse, the mix of winners here has been eclectic to say the least. I don’t see a super strong course fit, but that doesn’t mean I won’t try to narrow down my player pool based on specific skill sets.

The course is a Par 71 that measures less than 6,900 yards. With the course being short and featuring difficult-to-hit fairways, this is not a bomb-and-gauge type of course. In fact, it’s a less-than-driver course, which is likely the reason why we’ve seen so many types of golfers play well here in the past. With the course being on an island, it’s exposed to the elements. The wind generally dictates the difficulty of the course, and the early forecast is calling for 20+ MPH wind on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. This should increase the importance of accuracy off the tee, iron play, and around the green play.

Another week and another feature in the Core Plays article for Mr. Hoey. Since switching to the long putter, he has reeled off finishes of T9, MC, T4, T2, and T21. He’s only gained strokes putting in one of those events, but he’s been significantly better on the greens than he was before the putter switch. He’s one of the best ball strikers on the PGA TOUR. He’s certainly the best in this field, as he’s 4th in Strokes Gained: Off-the-Tee and 2nd in Strokes Gained: Approach. He’s played a ton during the fall, he’s in great form, and he finished T17 here last year.
