PGA DFS Picks: DraftKings & FanDuel Core Plays for the Genesis Scottish Open

The John Deere Classic was one of the worst tournaments in recent memory for the Core Plays article and for my DFS lineups. Those weeks aren’t fun, but they are going to happen to everyone. We dust ourselves off and turn our attention to the Genesis Scottish Open. This is always a fun event, and the field is always stacked because most of the top golfers in the world want to tee it up the week before the final major.

This is typically a great week to build tee time stacks because of the inconsistent weather in Scotland, but the forecast looks all too clean at the moment. It’s supposed to be sunny all four days with very little wind. It’s not the worst idea to build some weather stacks, but they will likely be more valuable come next week.

The Renaissance Club is a Par 70 that measures just under 7,300 yards from the tips. While this is a links course, purists will argue that it’s more of a links-style course than a real links course. We don’t have to get into the specifics, but let’s say that it’s more of a links course than we see all year on the PGA TOUR.

The fairways at The Renaissance Club are average in width (32 yards) and difficult to hit on average. With no water hazards and very little penalty for missing the fairways, it’s better to have distance than accuracy this week. That’s not to say this is a pure bomber’s course, but DataGolf does have distance as a lot more important than accuracy in their Course Fit tool. It’s also a driver-heavy course, as golfers hit driver on 72% of tee shots in 2024.

When conditions are calm (which is expected this week), the greens are very easy to hit in regulation. We can expect plenty of golfers to hit 80% of greens in regulation this week. This makes approach play and putting more important than around-the-green play. Good ball strikers and putters should fare well this week given the expected weather in Scotland. Experience on links courses and/or in Scotland is also a positive.

PGA golfer Tommy Fleetwood

Fleetwood aka “Tommy Heartbreak” is teeing it up for the first time since losing the Travelers Championship to Keegan Bradley on the final hole of the tournament. It was yet another loss to add to his growing list of heartbreaks on the PGA TOUR. It would make all too much sense for him to pick up his first PGA TOUR win in an event played in Europe. He’s one of the best all-around golfers in the field, he has played well all year, and he has an excellent track record on links courses. With very few standout options in the $6,000 range, I prefer balanced builds over the stars-and-scrubs builds this week.
