PGA DFS Core Plays: Shriners Children's Open
Top-ranked DFS player, Notorious, breaks down his favorite PGA DFS picks at various salary ranges for this week’s tournament. Who should you be building around? Find out below.
Welcome back everyone!
I hope many of you had a good week at the Sanderson Farms Championship. It was my first 6-of-6 in my main lineup in a while and even though my golfers didn’t do much on the weekend, I was able to coast to an easy cash in tournaments. I was also able to cash with my lineup in all three of the showdown slates that I entered. We didn’t get the outright win on Luke List, but otherwise it was a solid week. Let’s try to keep it going at the Shriners Children’s Open.
This is one of the best events during the fall and while the field isn’t as stacked as usual, it’s certainly stronger than it was last week in Mississippi. TPC Summerlin is a Par 71 that is located in the wonderful Las Vegas. It features three reachable par fives and measures only 7,255 yards on the scorecard. In each of the last five years, this has been one of the 10 easiest courses on the PGA Tour. With very little wind in the forecast, we can expect the winning score to be in the 25-under par range.
On paper, this seems like it should be a bomber’s course. The fairways are quite wide (35 yards) compared to tour average and the greens are very large (7,200 square feet). However, the course isn’t very long and the cost of missing the fairway is steep. In fact, the penalty for missing the fairway here last year was one of the highest on tour last season. This is due to two factors — you can get into trouble if you spray the ball and you need to keep it in the fairway to get approach shots close to the pins.

This doesn’t mean the bombers can’t and won’t perform well this week, but the driver is less of a weapon than it is at most venues. We’ve seen many plodder types succeed here over the years. I’m bumping down the off the tee metrics in my model overall, but am giving small weights to strokes gained off the tee, total driving, and driving accuracy. Approach play is always critical and that’s especially the case this week. And when we have birdie-fests, it often turns into a putting contest.
