Who is your favorite contrarian golfer (when considering price, key stats, projected ownership, etc.) on the board and why?

Notorious: J.J. Spaun – If you liked Spaun last week at a higher price point, you should have no issue going right back to him this week. He’s considerably cheaper and set to garner half as much ownership. Look, golf is hard. Even professionals are going to have bad rounds every now and then. He struggled on Thursday at the Sanderson Farms Championship and decided to withdraw rather than teeing it up on Friday. He’s an accurate driver of the ball and is one of the best iron players in the field. With so many unknowns with this new course, I love leaning on the good ball strikers this week.

stlcardinals84: Henrik Norlander – I highlighted Norlander last week as a great point-per-dollar value option, and he followed that up with another solid 28th-place finish. That will get the job done for a value play. His prices have barely come up this week, and early ownership numbers have him in the single digits again. What is even more impressive is that he has put up his strong recent run despite a relatively cold putter. If the flat stick heats up, we could be looking at top-10 upside. Norlander ranks 14th in this field in approach play and 12th in ball striking over the last 24 rounds.

JBails26: Michael Thorbjornsen – I wish his Strokes Gained: Approach numbers were better, but even with his struggling iron play, he ranks 2nd in Birdie or Better % over his last 50 rounds and ranks 11th in my mixed condition model on the Rabbit Hole from Betsperts Golf. We currently have his pOWN% in the single digits, which makes him a strong contrarian play if that holds. He’s flashed some upside in his limited TOUR sample, so I like either matching the field or going slightly overweight on him.

hondizzle: Michael Thorbjornsen – Kind of surprised to see early week ownership so low on Michael Thorbjornsen (5%). Coming off a week where he finished 8th, I would figure there would be some steam behind Thorbjornsen this week. I am very bullish on this young, talented player. I would not be surprised at all to see Thorbjornsen win during this fall series. We have seen a strong correlation in the last few years of very highly ranked college golfers making an impact on the TOUR early in their careers.

Robert Brown (Epignosis)

Robert Brown (aka Epignosis) was having lunch at a sports bar. A football game was on. He remarked to his wife that if he could have a second life, he’d like to be someone who enjoyed watching sports. That enjoyment began when he signed up for a fantasy football league that needed one more player. Since then, he has enjoyed playing NFL, NBA, and (especially) MLB DFS. When not teaching American literature, editing content for RotoGrinders (which he has done since 2019), or making lineups, Epignosis is rocking out or jazzing it up on one of several possible instruments.
