Who is your favorite contrarian golfer (when considering price, key stats, projected ownership, etc.) on the board and why?
Notorious: Sam Stevens – Based on the length of the course, the width of the fairways, and how often golfers hit driver when they played here in 2021, this is shaping up to be a great week for the bombers. Stevens is top 15 in the field in Driving Distance and one of the best on very long courses over the last 2 years. He doesn’t offer the highest floor, but he already has 3 top-3 finishes this season, so the upside is there at a cheap price point.
stlcardinals84: Daniel Berger – The recent form has taken a bit of a dip, but that has largely been due to the flat stick going ice cold. Berger’s tee-to-green numbers are still well above average, even in this 49-golfer field. He’s also priced near the minimum on both FD and DK, and we know he has top-5 upside if the putter warms up. Early projected ownership numbers have him at around 11% on DK and in the single digits on FD, and I’ll gladly be overweight on that for GPP builds.
Jbails26: Patrick Cantlay – With how expensive Scottie Scheffler is, it seems like most players in this pricing tier will get squeezed in terms of ownership. I don’t mind taking a shot at Cantlay on the lower end of this tier. His season hasn’t been anything to write home about, but he still has 3 top-5 finishes and is one of the best ball strikers in this field. Overall, he ranks 4th in Strokes Gained: Approach and 4th in Strokes Gained: Ball Striking over his last 50 rounds. I’ll wait to see where his pOWN% lands on before I make any hard stances on exposure.
hondizzle: Ryan Fox – From a pure game theory standpoint, I think you could make a very strong argument for any golfer under $7,000 this week. These are the top-50 players on TOUR this season, and we have a over a $7,000 difference between Scottie Scheffler and all the guys in the $6,000 range. No-cut events mean more chances to score. I like Fox because he is very long off the tee and should fit this course very well. There’s not much to overthink this week in such a limited field, but I do think there is an edge to playing some cheap guys over other mid-range golfers.
