Who is your favorite contrarian golfer (when considering price, key stats, projected ownership, etc.) on the board and why?

Notorious: Brian Harman – We have to stretch the term contrarian in a field of only 20 golfers, but Harman is currently projecting for around 30% ownership. He’s one of the best scramblers/putters in the world, which has really come in handy at this event in the past (Scottie Scheffler, Justin Thomas, Patrick Reed, etc.). He’s also accurate off the tee, which will help him avoid some of the trouble. If he has a good week with the irons, he could easily finish in the top 5. In his last appearance at this event, he finished 8th.

stlcardinals84: Aaron Rai – This tournament is a glorified exhibition, and Rai projects as one of the lowest-owned golfers in the field. Given his ball-striking ability when he is on, the game-theory angle dictates that this is a spot where I want to be overweight in a field of 20 golfers. He certainly has the ability to contend, and he’s one of the few that could be a slate-changer at his projected ownership.

JBails26: Nick Dunlap – A true contrarian play may be rather hard to find in a 20-man field, but my initial thinking is Dunlap won’t be as targeted in this range as Aaron Rai, Cam Young, Akshay Bhatia, Brian Harman, or Sepp Straka. I’ll take a shot on Dunlap, who has the 3rd-cheapest price tag on DraftKings but ranks 9th in Strokes Gained: Approach, 3rd in Birdie or Better %, and 4th in Par-5 Birdie or Better % over his last 50 rounds.

hondizzle: Cameron Young – With such a small field, I think you have to look at ownership a bit differently this week. Sub-20% pOwn% is a pretty small number. I am generally confused why someone of Cameron Young’s talent has yet to win on the PGA TOUR. I think the depression of his price and projected ownership this week is a reflection of what Young has not done in his career to this point. I like to take a gamble on spots where the talent is stronger than the perception of the DFS community. Young is a great iron player and can make birdies with the best. I love the price point this week.

Robert Brown (aka Epignosis) was having lunch at a sports bar. A football game was on. He remarked to his wife that if he could have a second life, he’d like to be someone who enjoyed watching sports. That enjoyment began when he signed up for a fantasy football league that needed one more player. Since then, he has enjoyed playing NFL, NBA, and (especially) MLB DFS. When not teaching American literature, editing content for RotoGrinders (which he has done since 2019), or making lineups, Epignosis is rocking out or jazzing it up on one of several possible instruments.
