Who is your favorite contrarian golfer (when considering price, key stats, projected ownership, etc.) on the board and why?

Notorious: Matt McCarty – He’s going to be popular on FanDuel given the fact that they mistakenly priced him at the minimum ($7,000), but I don’t expect him to garner much ownership on DraftKings. He’s making his PGA TOUR debut. While I typically like to take a wait-and-see approach in these situations, his form is too good to ignore. He’s made 12 straight cuts on the Korn Ferry Tour, with 3 wins and 3 more top-5 finishes. He’s top 10 on the KFT in scoring average, birdie or better percentage, greens in regulation, and putting average. I’d rather be early than late to the McCarty party.

stlcardinals84: Henrik Norlander – Early ownership projections have Norlander in the single digits, and I’ll gladly take that in GPP builds. There isn’t much to love for value, but Norlander appears to be regaining the solid form that he showed glimpses of a few years ago. Over the past two months, he has finished 12th or better in two PGA TOUR events and one DP World Tour event, which was an impressive 8th-place finish at the Omega European Masters. He has finished inside the top 25 in each of the last 4 editions of this tournament, with 3 top-5 finishes in that mix. I really like him as a value option.

JBails26: Jacob Bridgeman – He’s an incredibly volatile golfer, but that’s to be expected from a 24-year-old player. He jumps out at me since we have him for around 9% pOWN% in our early run of ownership projections, but he ranks 2nd in my mixed condition model on the Rabbit Hole from Betsperts Golf. If that holds, it won’t take much to match or be overweight versus the field.

hondizzle: Eric Cole – I think this might be the weakest field I have ever seen in my 10+ years of playing DFS golf. It will be super interesting to see if there is enough groupthink to push ownership in any kind of condensed pockets. My typical line of attack on weeks with this much uncertainty is to really invest in players who have a proven record or that you feel have a ton of talent. Eric Cole checks both of those boxes for me this week. Despite a rough start to the season, Cole has shown a bit of life since the middle of June. There are not many proven winners in this week’s field, so I will look to target golfers I think are ready to win. Cole is a solid tee-to-green golfer who just needs a hot week with the putter to be in contention.

Robert Brown (aka Epignosis) was having lunch at a sports bar. A football game was on. He remarked to his wife that if he could have a second life, he’d like to be someone who enjoyed watching sports. That enjoyment began when he signed up for a fantasy football league that needed one more player. Since then, he has enjoyed playing NFL, NBA, and (especially) MLB DFS. When not teaching American literature, editing content for RotoGrinders (which he has done since 2019), or making lineups, Epignosis is rocking out or jazzing it up on one of several possible instruments.
