PGA DFS Picks: DraftKings & FanDuel Expert Survey for the 3M Open
Who is your favorite golfer for cash games?
Notorious: Tony Finau
stlcardinals84: Tony Finau
JBails26: Tony Finau
hondizzle: Tony Finau
Who is your favorite contrarian golfer (when considering price, key stats, projected ownership, etc.) on the board and why?
Notorious: Maverick McNealy – After busting as the chalk at the John Deere Classic and then missing the cut at The Open Championship, McNealy should fly under the radar. While the last two results aren’t ideal, he’s having an excellent year on the PGA TOUR. He already has 3 top-10 finishes to his name, and prior to the last two events, he had made 13 straight cuts. He’s one of the best drivers of the ball in the field and is capable of gaining 4+ strokes putting any week (he’s done it 3 times in his last 12 events). If his approach play shows up, he has the talent to contend.
stlcardinals84: Rico Hoey – After a bumpy road to start, Hoey is finally starting to find his footing on the PGA TOUR. He has finished inside the top 10 in three of his last four events, with a T6 at the Rocket Mortgage Classic (on an easy course), a playoff loss at the ISCO Championship (on an easy course), and a T8 at the Barracuda Championship (on an easy course). He made at least 22 birdies/eagles in each of those three events. He profiles as a golfer who is going to thrive on easy courses and in weaker fields, and the majority of DFS players aren’t taking notice yet. This might be one of the last chances to buy in at lower ownership.

JBails26: Keith Mitchell – He is popping as an OK value but not a lock-button value. This makes me think he won’t show up in a lot of hand builds or sim/optimizer builds for the 3M Open. I haven’t been on Mitchell for most of this season, but this feels like a good time to hop on when he ranks 6th in my mixed condition model on the Rabbit Hole from Betsperts Golf. Over his last 50 rounds, Mitchell ranks 2nd in Strokes Gained: Approach, 1st in Strokes Gained: Ball Striking, and 6th in Birdie or Better %.
hondizzle: Patrick Rodgers – I think we could get a first time winner this week. Rodgers is by no means a household name to those who don’t follow the TOUR on a regular basis. He is, however, a talented player who should have a win under his belt at this point in his career. I am normally a big course history guy, and nothing about Rodgers’ past performance in this event (handful of top 30s) screams that he should win this week. Rodgers, however, has posted a few top 10 finishes this season, and I will take a flier on his talent at what should be low ownership.
