PGA DFS Picks: DraftKings & FanDuel Expert Survey for the TOUR Championship

Who is your favorite contrarian golfer (when considering price, key stats, projected ownership, etc.) on the board and why?

Notorious: Viktor Hovland – It will be interesting to see where his ownership ends up, but we have him projected for around 20% early in the week. He won the TOUR Championship last year and was expected to take a big leap forward this year. Unfortunately, the ball striking tailed off, and his short game went back to being one of the worst on TOUR. However, he seems to have found something in his game the last two weeks. He gained 8.6 strokes ball striking at the FedEx St. Jude Championship and 4.4 strokes ball striking last week. We know he can have splash weeks with the putter, and despite his struggles around the green, he tends to play difficult courses very well.

stlcardinals84: Collin Morikawa – At the moment, Morikawa has the lowest projected ownership of any golfer priced above $9,000 on DraftKings. Given his ball striking ability when he’s on his game, I’ll gladly take him as the most contrarian option at the top. He’s not starting too far back at a T6 position, and he is the only golfer in the field that ranks inside the top 10 of this field in every single strokes gained category over the last 24 rounds. He has finished 6th here twice already, and I feel like he will set a new personal best this year with a top 5.

JBails26: Ludvig Aberg – Unless you dive way into the $6,000 range on DraftKings, it may be hard to find a really low owned golfer in a 30-man field. However, I do think Aberg could be lower owned than some of the names he’s surrounded by, especially Xander Schauffele and Scottie Scheffler. Overall, Aberg ranks 3rd in my mixed condition model on the Rabbit Hole from Betsperts Golf, including 4th in Birdie or Better % and 10th in Bogey Avoidance, which should be a good combination in this no-cut event.

hondizzle: Viktor Hovland – With only 30 players in the field, it will really be hard to have what you would normally define as a contrarian golfer. With finish points kind of already baked in, I think most lineup builders will do their best to get as much exposure to Xander and Scottie as possible. Those types of lineups will have a lot of exposure to golfers under $7,000. My favorite route to be different this week would be to only go with one of the top two players and then try not to have a golfer under $7,000. Viktor Hovland is a player who could get it done this week at what could be lower ownership relative to others in the field.

Robert Brown (aka Epignosis) was having lunch at a sports bar. A football game was on. He remarked to his wife that if he could have a second life, he’d like to be someone who enjoyed watching sports. That enjoyment began when he signed up for a fantasy football league that needed one more player. Since then, he has enjoyed playing NFL, NBA, and (especially) MLB DFS. When not teaching American literature, editing content for RotoGrinders (which he has done since 2019), or making lineups, Epignosis is rocking out or jazzing it up on one of several possible instruments.
