PGA DFS Picks: DraftKings & FanDuel Expert Survey for the U.S. Open

Who is your top contrarian golfer (when considering price, key stats, projected ownership, etc.) on the board and why?

Notorious: Tyrrell Hatton – We currently have him projected for less than 10% ownership on both FanDuel and DraftKings. Despite finishing T21 or better in 11 of 13 starts this season (including a top 10 at the Masters), everyone seems to be talking themselves out of him this week. Every podcast that I have listened to is quick to point out his temper and the fact that everyone is going to have bad breaks over the course of the tournament. I don’t see it as an issue whatsoever. He’s even talked about how letting off steam allows him to get it out of his system and move onto the next shot. Over the last 18 months, he’s well above the field average in all four of the strokes gained categories. I love the way his game sets up for Pinehurst No. 2.

JBails26: Ludvig Aberg – I don’t expect him to be under 10% owned this week, but he will be a viable pivot over Collin Morikawa, who is projecting for higher ownership at just $200 less. We currently have Aberg for around 14% ownership, but he’s showing up in around 22% of our optimals, suggesting he should be higher owned this week. Aberg is one of the most complete players in the field, ranking 4th in Total Strokes Gained over his last 50 rounds

hondizzle: Patrick Cantlay – This is the classic zig when others zag approach. Cantlay let many of us down last week at a course where he normally plays some of his best golf. Talent and great history in major championship venues at low ownership always tends to pique my interest. Cantlay is a great second-shot player and should find this course to his liking.

ezellmt: Max Homa – This one is part stat based and part gut feel. Here’s what the stats like: In his last seven events, he lost strokes around-the-green once and strokes on approach once. He also seems to have turned around the major challenges with two top 10s in his last three appearances. The gut feel part is that Pinehurst No. 2 seems to be the best chance for him to pick off a US Open, as it fits his skill set better than the longer ones with thick rough.

Robert Brown (aka Epignosis) was having lunch at a sports bar. A football game was on. He remarked to his wife that if he could have a second life, he’d like to be someone who enjoyed watching sports. That enjoyment began when he signed up for a fantasy football league that needed one more player. Since then, he has enjoyed playing NFL, NBA, and (especially) MLB DFS. When not teaching American literature, editing content for RotoGrinders (which he has done since 2019), or making lineups, Epignosis is rocking out or jazzing it up on one of several possible instruments.
