PGA DFS Picks: DraftKings & FanDuel Expert Survey for The Genesis Invitational
Which useful trend or statistic stuck out most during your research?
Notorious: When looking at the individual strokes gained categories relative to total strokes gained at this course, strokes gained around the green was by far the most important compared to tour averages. This is likely due to a couple of factors. These greens are difficult to hit on average and have run-off areas surrounding them. This creates more scrambling opportunities than most courses and creates some tricky up and downs. We’ve seen good ball strikers with no short game struggle here in the past.
STLCardinals84: This will be a tough course, and it generally lends itself to players with experience. I will be shying away from Riviera first-timers like Ludvig Aberg this week. It’s also worth noting that this is the one signature event that IS going to have a cut despite the limited field. The tournament will be trimmed to the top 50 and ties (plus those within 10 shots of the lead, if applicable), so avoiding the golfers that finish at the very bottom will be of prime importance.
Jbails26: Looking at Data Golf’s course history tool, Riviera Country Club is one of the top courses where course history is the most predictive. Overall, I tend to think talent and course fit outweighs course history, but since course history is shown to be predictive at this venue, I like using it in tiebreaker situations this week.
hondizzle: Once again, I think we have to look at this event in terms of how the addition of a signature event impacts each tournament. Last week’s event field could arguably be looked at as a bit weaker due to the fact that it was one week after a signature event. This week’s Genesis Invitational will be a signature event that features a different cut rule. We have a limited field of 70 golfers with a cut to 50 plus anyone within 10 shots. In theory you could have all 70 golfers make the cut. From a roster building standpoint, I think there is merit to taking a shot on cheaper options more than you would if this was a full-field event with a normal cut. Rivera is a strong course history event that favors golfers who can hit it high and those who are typically really good second-shot golfers. You don’t have to fade it to win at Riviera, but historically golfers who can fade the ball have done well at this venue in the past.
