Who is your top contrarian golfer (when considering price, key stats, projected ownership, etc.) on the board and why?
Notorious: Nicolas Echavarria – The fact that he’s 36th on the leaderboard will keep ownership to a minimum. While his current placing isn’t anything to write home about, he’s currently 4th in the field in Strokes Gained: Ball Striking. With little wind in the forecast on Sunday, I could see him having another great day ball striking and hopefully making some putts.
stlcardinals84: Taylor Pendrith – The big hitter is lurking at T23 right now, and that won’t put him at the top of many radars for the final round. However, we have seen how much Quail Hollow is catering to the longer drivers of the ball, and Pendrith looks plenty comfortable on the course. If he gets out to a strong start, he could threaten for a backdoor top-10 finish.
Jbails26: Joaquin Niemann – With his placing points to start the day, I can’t imagine Niemann will garner much ownership. When his game is on, Niemann has the potential to pile up birdies. He leads the field in Strokes Gained: Approach and ranks 10th in Strokes Gained: Putting thus far through 3 rounds. There are enough salary-saving golfers to trot out Scheffler/Niemann builds.
hondizzle: Viktor Hovland – I liked Hovland to start the week, and I see this as a great spot to get exposure to a talented golfer who is outside of the top 15. I want all the Scottie tomorrow, so my roster builds will be limited in terms of spend-up options. However, there is enough value to get exposure to Hovland or other expensive golfers. I am hoping for a hot early run from what at times can be a very aggressive Hovland.
