Who is your favorite contrarian golfer (when considering price, key stats, projected ownership, etc.) on the board and why?
Notorious: Cameron Young – Given the pricing and star power on this slate, I don’t expect many to click on Young. He went out with Ben Griffin, Bryson DeChambeau, and Justin Thomas in the practice round on Tuesday. I love his chances if he gets paired with any of these three golfers. Griffin has quietly been one of the top golfers on TOUR this season, so I’m hoping they are a pairing for the first session. Young has been red-hot with four top-5 finishes in his last 8 starts. He’s also been very good in match play events in his career. In 14 matches, he’s won 8.5 points (61% points rate).
stlcardinals84: My final answer to this is going to be “the best golfer that has to sit on the bench for the first set of matches,” because all of those golfers tend to be owned at less than 5–10% most of the time. If there’s a bit of a surprise with the 1st-round pairings and someone like Viktor Hovland or Justin Thomas sits out, I want to be overweight on that golfer in GPP builds. All other things being equal, my choice here would be Justin Rose, given that he is 7-2-1 in his Ryder Cup career in foursomes and has a solid four-ball record too—but this is all a bit of guesswork until we see pairings for the first set of matches.
Jbails26: J.J. Spaun – This all includes some guesswork since we are trying to do this before pairings are announced, but that’s OK. I have some interest in Spaun because his cheap price can help open things up. He was also in the Scottie Scheffler, Russell Henley, and Harris English pod. Granted, I think Henley is most likely to be paired with Scheffler. It will be something to keep an eye on leading up to the pairings release. Spaun has a great game for this course, ranking 6th in Total Driving, and his scrambling ability (10th) could make him a great play in these formats.
hondizzle: Harris English — You have to figure that once 1st-round pairings are released, many sharp players will make adjustments to rosters to maximize exposure to golfers who are playing in the morning matches on Friday. It would not surprise me to see English get a morning pairing, but in all likelihood, I bet he sits out the first session. This should keep his ownership low. Overall, I think English is a great fit for this format because he is the type of player who will make for a good partner. He can play both foursomes and four-ball and is just a good all-around golfer. Maybe a slightly overlooked fact is that English plays a Titleist Pro V1 golf ball. This will make it easier for him to play in a foursome match without having to worry about which type of ball to use. This could keep the Maxfli golfer, Ben Griffin, out of a few of the sessions.
