Who is your top contrarian golfer (when considering price, key stats, projected ownership, etc.) on the board and why?
Notorious: Rasmus Neergaard-Petersen – Everyone loves loading up on the very top of the leaderboard for final round Showdown contests, so I am hoping RNP flies a tad under the radar. He was one of the top values in my model to start the week and has outperformed expectations thus far. He’s currently T8 after 3 rounds and has gained 10.5 strokes tee to green (5th best in the field).
stlcardinals84: Rasmus Neergaard-Petersen – The top of the leaderboard is littered with values, so Neergard-Petersen might slip through the cracks a bit despite starting the day in 8th place. He ranks 6th in the field from tee to green this week and has plenty of distance off the tee. I like his chances to try to move up into the top 5 at lower ownership than some of the other values.
Jbails26: Russell Henley – Henley is priced right by Sam Burns, so I don’t think his ownership will get out of control. His metrics don’t look spectacular this tournament, but they’re also not terrible. He’s still top 25 in Strokes Gained: Putting, Approach, and Around-the-Green (getting crushed off the tee). I am mostly just hoping that he progresses to his long-term form and can find a few more birdies and move up for a few more placing bonuses.
hondizzle: Cameron Young – I have this feeling that even par will have a chance to win the tournament on Sunday. With only five golfers at even par or better, it’s not crazy to think that an over par score might still have an outside shot of winning this event. I am going with chasers on Sunday to have a chance to spoil the first major win for Sam Burns. While my favorite chaser will be the one and only Scottie Scheffler, I think someone like Cameron Young could steal the show. Long off the tee and plenty strong, I like the way Mr. Young has played over the last few weeks. A fun fact to remember is that Oakmont has been home to a few first-time major winners.
