Which useful trend or statistic stuck out most during your research?
Notorious: How about this: We get to talk about Tiger Woods this week. I wish it was because he was in the field, but instead, it’s because he designed this course. The event is typically held at El Cameleon, but will now be held at El Cardonal in Los Cabos, Mexico. The two courses couldn’t be any different on paper. El Cameleon is a tight track that requires precision, and El Cardonal features 60-yard wide fairways and 8,200 square foot greens. I personally see comps to Kapalua, especially since both courses feature undulations in the fairway and elevation changes.
STLCardinals84: This tournament is being contested on a new course this year, so we can largely throw out course history as a statistical element this week. The new venue is a traditional par 72 layout that is wide open off the tee, and the course is a Tiger Woods design. While we are doing some guesswork with this, I am expecting favorable scoring conditions and a setup that caters to scorers and those that have length off the tee — just as Tiger Woods was in his career.
hondizzle: We get the debut of a PGA Tour event at a Tiger Woods designed course. Players who dabble in course design typically build courses the way they like to play golf. Nickulas courses often feature long iron second shots and somewhat of a high fade basis in design. From what little information that is floating around the interweb, it appears Tiger wants a golf course that forces players to think about how to play each hole. In addition to being a long golf course, I think this week golfers will have to navigate the course in a very tactical manner. For me, that puts an extra bump on golfers who can control the golf ball a bit more in terms of iron play.
