PGA DFS GPP Breakdown: THE CJ CUP Byron Nelson
Long-time grinder, stlcardinals84, breaks down his top PGA DFS picks in various price ranges for this week’s tournament. Which golfers should you be targeting to try and take down the big DFS tournaments? Find out below!
Welcome back, golf grinders! Another fun golf week is in store with THE CJ CUP Byron Nelson on the schedule. We are coming off quite a few strong-field events in a row and a weird team event last week, so it’s no surprise that this week is a bit of a “lull” in the schedule. That gives us a very weak field for this tournament. We also have a boring course hosting the event, as there is little trouble around this venue. It’s just kind of a boring week, but there is still money out there to be won, and we are all dealing with the same player pool. No complaining is allowed!

TPC Craig Ranch will be the host venue for this event for the fifth time. The venue is a long par 71 that can stretch to nearly 7,500 yards, but it does not offer much defense for today’s golfers. K.H. Lee won each of the first two editions, getting to -25 and -26 in his two wins (that would be -21 and -22 under the current setup, as one of the par fives has been transitioned to a par four since those first two editions). Jason Day won the event two years ago at -23, and Taylor Pendrith won last year with the same score. As usual, a birdie-fest is in store unless winds kick up, which is always possibility in Texas. The wind (and some water) is the main defense for this course, but it should still play well under par on average. I will prioritize the bigger hitters, the strong tee-to-green players, and birdie makers.
It’s also worth noting that, with strong scoring conditions, getting as many golfers through the cut line is extra imperative this week.
Let’s take a look at some of my favorite GPP picks!
PGA DFS Picks: DraftKings GPP Breakdown for THE CJ CUP Byron Nelson
Si Woo Kim
DraftKings: $9,400
FanDuel: $11,400
Before I really dig in, we have to address the elephant in the room, which is, “Why don’t you have Scottie Scheffler here?” It seems like everyone on the planet is locking Scheffler in this weak field. On one hand, I cannot blame everyone for doing that. He is clearly the most talented golfer and will be playing on an easy course in a weak field. He seems to be showing signs of life, with narrow misses from victory in a few recent events. On the other hand, paying $13,300 on DK and $14,000 on FD for a golfer who hasn’t won all season and has an ownership projection above 40% seems somewhat insane to me.
As much as this scares me, I am intentionally going to be underweight on Scheffler in GPP builds. My favorite high-end pivot is Kim. Kim is a golfer who tends to play the same courses well every year, and he has played well at TPC Craig Ranch in the past, with T13 and T2 finishes in the last 2 editions. He ranks 15th in this field in Strokes Gained: Total and 9th on approach over the last 36 rounds, and he is a local resident who is very familiar with the course. I expect him to be in contention come Sunday afternoon.
