Hello, Golf Grinders! We have the Fed Ex St. Jude Championship as our first playoff event at TPC Southwind in Memphis. This tournament used to be a typical PGA Tour event for many years before being moved to be a WGC event. That didn’t really pan out as a success, so now the tournament has been selected to host the first playoff event for the third straight year. With WGC events now being a thing of the past, that decision appears to be a smart one. The tournament seems to be settling in nicely with its new spot on the calendar.

Tool Highlights

One constant has remained over the years, and that is that TPC Southwind can still pose a difficult test at times. Over the last 14 PGA Tour events held here, only one winner has finished with a score better than -16. A few winning scores have been around the -10 mark. There are no super easy holes on this course, and good ball-striking is paramount to success. We have another par 70 course with just two par fives, so I will lean on some par 4 scoring metrics as well.

Given the playoff format changes over the past few years, we only have 70 golfers competing in this event. That makes it similar to when TPC Southwind hosted the WGC for a few years. The top 50 in the standings following this week will advance to next week’s BMW Championship.

Let’s get to some of my favorite GPP picks for the week!

In a no cut event with a limited field, you are probably going to need the winner of the tournament in your lineups to have any chance of hitting big prizes this week. As such, I see no way to avoid using Scottie Scheffler. He has finished outside the top ten ONE TIME since the beginning of February. I don’t think we are all realizing in the moment just how good his season has been. He has seven wins and one finish outside the top ten in the last six months. That is insane. He’s going to lead whatever statistical metrics you want to put together. The putter is no longer a massive liability. There are no weaknesses, and I will get plenty of exposure this week. His tee to green prowess should thrive on this course, and he leads this field off the tee and on approach over the last 36 rounds.
