Welcome, Grinders of all sports! We always have a few more DFS players joining the lineup-building process this week with a major tournament and MLB on their All Star Break. If you fall into that bucket, hello there! We hope you stick around for the long haul and get enamored with DFS Golf! There are conveniently large GPP contests to be won for the season’s final major, as the calendar brings us The Open Championship this week at Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland.

Before we get too deep into the analysis, I will say that it is extremely important to monitor the weather forecast this week. This tournament is being played on a traditional links course where the main course defense is the wind, and the course will become much more difficult if Mother Nature gets involved. Keep an eye on the PGA weather as we get closer to lock for updates from Kevin Roth.

The early forecast shows a decent amount of wind and a chance of rain every day, but it does not show much of an edge for any specific tee-time wave. However, I will likely make some tournament rosters that stack tee-time waves even if the forecast doesn’t show an advantage, as things can change at a moment’s notice in this part of the world. We see this quite often, and the advantage can often be exacerbated in The Open because tee times are more spread out with everyone starting on the first tee and no split tee starts (where some golfers start their rounds on #10).

Tool Highlights

Royal Portrush will be hosting The Open Championship for the third time overall and the first time since 2019, when Shane Lowry lapped the field on his way to a 6-shot victory. The course will play as a moderate length Par 71. This is your traditional European links layout. Shot placement will be absolutely critical, and I want players that can get the ball from tee to green successfully. Total Driving and Ball Striking will be major statistical metrics that I prioritize, with a splash of Par-4 Scoring given the Par 71 scorecard. As with any links layout, there are a lot of runoff areas on the side of these greens, so being able to save par after the occasional errant approach shot will be of prime importance. That is especially true if the wind and rain kick up, which has me emphasizing Bogey Avoidance and Scrambling a little more given the projected forecast.

Let’s move along to some of my favorite GPP options for the season’s final major!

PGA DFS Picks: DraftKings & FanDuel GPP Breakdown for The Open Championship

Rory McIlroy
DraftKings: $11,500
FanDuel: $11,900

PGA Golfer Rory McIlroy

In the lead-up to this tournament, I was really weighing whether or not I wanted to go with Scottie Scheffler or McIlroy as my #1 option. Since I used McIlroy in this top space last week, maybe it would make sense to change it up and talk about someone else. Fortunately, the pricing made it an easy decision to stick with McIlroy. Even if they were at the same price as each other, I think you could make a very strong case for McIlroy at #1. After all, he’s playing a home game in Northern Ireland, he’s comfortable on links layouts, and he finished T2 last week compared to T8 for Scheffler. After McIlroy had struggled since winning the Masters, that result was very positive to see. If there’s any event that will get McIlroy’s competitive fire going again, it’s a major in his home country.

Then, there’s the pricing element. McIlroy is priced at $11,500 on DK. Scheffler is $14,200. McIlroy is priced at $11,900 on FD. Scheffler is $13,900 on FD. There is no way there should be this much disparity between them on a links course. This is an easy call when you factor in salary and projected ownership. McIlroy is my top play if you are spending up for your roster anchor.
